Better Than TED (1 Timothy 3:1-13)
Qualifications for Oversight and Service
1 Trustworthy is the saying: “If any man aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a good work.”
2 An overseer, then, must be beyond criticism—the husband of one wife, clear-minded, self- controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach,
3 not addicted to wine, not violent but gentle, peaceable, free from the love of money,
4 managing his own household well, keeping his children under control with all respectfulness.
5 (But if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God’s community?)
6 He must not be a new believer, or he may become puffed up and fall into the same judgment as the devil.
7 Furthermore, he must have a good reputation with those outside, so that he will not fall into disgrace and the devil’s trap.
8 Servant-leaders likewise must be dignified, not double-speaking, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain.
9 They must keep hold of the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience.
10 Also let them first be tested—then let those who are blameless serve as servant-leaders.
11 Women likewise must be dignified, not backbiting; clear-minded, trustworthy in every respect. 12 Let servant-leaders be husbands of one wife, managing their children and their own households well.
13 For those who have served well as servant-leaders gain for themselves a good standing and great confidence in the faith that is in Messiah Yeshua.
Reflect:
There are many, many books on leadership. Along with each of these books is a seminar you can attend, a TED talk you can watch, or some other form of media you can consume in the quest to be a good leader. While many of them may be helpful, it is important to understand that God has His own standards for leadership, and none of them involve being a CEO or some kind of big shot! This chapter reflects that a Godly leader must have a life marked by spiritual fruit and servanthood, borne out over time. At Restoration, we seek to be and to raise up leaders that are focused on serving God by serving others. God has already been faithful in providing us with leaders with hearts that seek after God and that exhibit Godly character, and we believe that He will continue to do so! While no leader is perfect, it is important to remember that anyone involved in spiritual leadership needs our support and prayers.
Prayer: Father, take care of my leaders. Keep them and their families safe. Provide for their needs and help me to remember to pray for them. In Yeshua’s name, amen.

At Restoration, we have made it a priority to seek God first in prayer. During this season of counting of the Omer, we have decided to do this collectively as a congregation in the days leading up to Shavuot. Together, we want to trust in His power to impact our lives, our congregation, our city, and our world. The last 10 days we will encourage a corporate time of fasting and prayer, which starts the evening of May 9 and ends the evening of May 19. The conclusion of this season of prayer will culminate in a congregational picnic on the 50th day, the day of Shavuot - Sunday, May 20 at noon.
